In Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1899, my grandfather John Franklin Nielsen (Grandpa Frank), bought a pictorial wall map entitled Route of the Mormon Pioneers from Nauvoo to Great Salt Lake. On the "About Me" page of this website you can see me holding that original print.
The original is a 14" x 41.25" lithograph by an unknown artist that traces the historical 1846 to 1847 route of the Mormon pioneers, led by Brigham Young. Although this 1899 commemorative map specifically honors the Vanguard Company, tens of thousands of other Mormon pioneers from 1846 to 1869 are honored as well.
Many of my ancestors are included in this honor. For example, Great-Great Grandfather Peder Christian Nielsen and family became members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Denmark in 1855, and immigrated to Salt Lake City in 1866. They sailed the Atlantic Ocean, went up the Hudson River and then the Erie Canal to Buffalo, New York, across Lake Erie to Cleveland, Ohio, rode the rails to St. Joseph, Missouri, took a riverboat to Wyoming, Nebraska, and finally walked 1,100 miles on the Mormon Trail to Salt Lake City, Utah with an oxen team. The trip from Denmark to Salt Lake City took a total of 21 weeks.
On October 9, 1953, I was seven days old, and it was my father's 35th birthday, when John Franklin Nielsen died at the age of 73. My dad inherited Grandpa's map, and I inherited Grandpa's name. When I was 25 years old, I was given the map.
My wish is for you to have a copy of Route of the Mormon Pioneers from Nauvoo to Great Salt Lake in your family for generations to come, just as I've had in mine. Therefore I've taken it upon myself to enhance the image with computer graphics and republish it on high quality canvas with fade-resistant inks, for a lasting, beautiful piece of artwork. It looks amazing! My bright new version is enlarged to 15" x 48".
I am Frank Nielsen, great-great grandson of Mormon Pioneers and professional map man at your service.
